  • WP’s: Cyclist Road-User Interaction Support (CRUISer)

    WP1:      Literature review and user requirements.

    Coordinator: R. (Rosemary) Dubbeldam, Roesingh Research and Development.

    The literature with regard to single-sided accidents and cycling behaviour will be studied and reported. This review should include results from recent naturalistic cycling studies that focussed on the role of the infrastructure. On the basis of the review, gaps in knowledge will be identified and this shall be used as input for the questionnaire study.

    WP2:      On-site camera observation and Naturalistic Cycling study.

    Coordinator: D. (Dick) de Waard, University of Groningen.

    On strategic road locations, cameras will be installed to observe interaction between older cyclists and other road user. For example, should the literature study indicate that keeping balance near an intersection is problematic, then observation of video images might show how these problems develop and what can be done against it in terms of technical aids. Data will be collected during a few days per location.

    WP3:      Product specifications and technical feasibilities.

    Coordinator: M. (Maurice) Tak, INDES.

    Using the input from WP1 (user requirements) and WP2 (observations road user interactions), Indes will investigate and write down the specifications for the products to be developed in terms of what functionality in sensors, actuators and user interface is needed to prevent a solution for the identified user risk scenarios. Also constraints concerning e.g. ergonomics, CE-guidelines, road and vehicle standards will be mapped.

    WP4:      Development of safety product components for the selected system(s) and system integration on bicycle.

    Coordinator: M. (Maurice) Tak, INDES.

    The favoured ideas will be worked out in more detail in the form of e.g. sketches, animations and product brochures so that feedback can be gathered from interviews with users and experts. A selection will be made for the most appealing concepts and checked with a group of older cyclists. Specifications will be written down in more detail.

    WP5:      Evaluation of product components and validation of user requirements.

    Assessment of (1) the effects of various forms, timings and situations of feed-forward information on the behaviour and mental workload of older cyclists; (2) the effects of bicycle modifications on the behaviour and mental workload of older cyclists

    WP6:      Final field evaluation; long term effects of use of prototype(s) with target end users.

    Coordinator: D. (Dick) de Waard, University of Groningen.

    Naturalistic cycling study: combination of all, longer term, include naturalistic cycling observation & questionnaire studies. Prototype bicycles will be made available for target group participants who will be recruited with help of our connections with Ouderenbond and Fietsersbond. They will ride these bicycles on a normal day-to-day basis. The bicycle will be equipped with a GPS (action) camera and data with regard to route, speed, plus images of all rides will be stored. Participants will register remarkable events and experience with the system. Participants will ride for at least one week with the bicycle as to get enough time to get used to the system and get sufficient time to evaluate. The aim is to gather data of 20 older cyclists.
