60 million European citizens (about 10% of all citizens >25y) are diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Up to 25% of them will develop diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). 25% of DFU that do not heal end up in amputation. Every 30 seconds somewhere in the world a DFU related amputation takes place. 5-year mortality rates after amputation are as high as 48%. Targeted offloading of the foot is the key to DFU prevention. Current solutions fail as the individual skills of the shoe technician determine the effectiveness of the product. Therefore, currently the focus is still on wound care. If a current solution is effective, it is only effective as long as the foot shape remains stable, which is not the case in DM. With IndiRock’nSole we will tackle this problem with an innovative shoe concept. With DFU prevention we will keep these patients mobile and relief them from their fear for amputation.
